I can’t remember the last time I posted a rant, I dont’ think I ever have. If somebody does something I think is stupid I will usually take the piss and make a joke of it. I suppose this is a coping mechanism that I use to stop me from getting annoyed. But on this occasion…..
In the midst of sadness there are some really good things coming out of this crisis, some people are showing great generosity of spirit and lots of people are making lots of nice things happen. There are also some deluded people who are attempting to create an opportunity for themselves that does not exist, and probably never will.
In my job I am incredibly fortunate that I meet some absolutely phenomenally talented skilled, professional musicians, some have achieved the recognition they deserve some have not, either way it is always a privilege to work with these people and they are a real pleasure to be around.
There are also many singers/vocalists who make an honest living by entertaining, some are obviously better than others, some are trained some are not, this does not really matter because if they are good enough they can get work singing.
Here is my rant!
Why is it that some “singers” believe that (because they can get gigs singing) they are also qualified to teach singing /be a vocal coach.
In the last four days two singers have sent me invitations to receive “vocal coaching” from them Although I had over 30 years experience working as a vocalist and performed many different genres of music, when I wanted a safety net of having another string to my professional bow (in case the gigs dried up). I spent 2 years training so that I could qualify and be able to vocal coach. Even after my training I realise I have my limitations and would not attempt to coach above my own level.
It is not only that the two individuals who have approached me have no formal training to be a vocal coach, but more importantly they do not understand/are not familiar with singing techniques. The worrying thing is that if they manage find themselves some naive students they may actually encourage them to damage their voices.
The two individuals who believe that the lockdown has given them entitlement to offer their services as vocal coaches would not know their supraglottis from their sphincter.
Well that is my rant over, and……
It’s Saturday, I don’t have a gig tonight so there is no preparation work to do. I have a few hours to spare and have decided that I can financially benefit, and you can learn a new skill.
